The region has been hit by huge job losses recently. A combination of the collapse of traditional manufacturing vacancies and the global credit crunch has hit jobs in Rotherham hard. During one particularly savage week, Rotherham saw 900 jobs cuts. 100 positions were slashed at RBS followed by over 700 at Corus steelmaking,
And the knock on effects on the area in the short term could be disastrous – with some speculating that the jobless figure could double with so many potential consumers out of work. The area became famed for Rotherham’s jobs in pits, with families built around mines providing the coal and steel which powered the nation through the industrial revolution.
Today things have seen huge change to the landscape of jobs in Rotherham. There is now only one pit left, and it is estimated to only have around five years of coal stock remaining.
In response to the spiral of decline hitting the area, the council has launched an ambitious bid to regenerate the town. They are attempting to diversify output to modernize, while investing in education and training facilities to bring sustainable industry.
A 25 year £2billion pound project is attempting to bring back jobs in Rotherham. There is a new NHS centre, a new leisure centre, upgrades to the local train station and a new campus for the town’s college.
The message here is that the town will survive the tough times and come out stronger. New Rotherham jobs will be better paid with better benefits to workers.
